Plans to convert the Godolphin Arms into a care home have been approved by Cornwall Council.
The residential home will specialise in mental health care, relocating an existing service from Newquay town centre. According to the application, the move was necessary to secure the business's future, as its current site – The Crescent – was described as an "older building with high maintenance costs and a haphazard internal layout not fit for future care use."
Once the conversion is complete, the care home will provide employment for eight people, with the adjacent hotel annexe set to accommodate staff.
The decision marks a new chapter for the Godolphin Arms, which closed in November 2024 after 41 years under the ownership of Margaret Ashwood – known to regulars as Muff. She announced her retirement on her 84th birthday, describing the closure as "quite devastating."
