A special screening of the documentary Jo in the Water will take place at the Lighthouse Cinema in Newquay.

The event is being held on Wednesday 13 May at 7pm and will include a screening of the film followed by a question-and-answer session.

The feature-length documentary follows Exmouth sea swimmer and environmental campaigner Jo Bateman as she challenges water companies over sewage pollution and its impact on coastlines and wildlife.

The film also features Jeremy Vine, Chris Packham and Jim Murray.

Organisers say the documentary explores the growing movement campaigning for cleaner waterways and aims to highlight the connection between communities, nature and environmental responsibility.

The film was directed by Pip Piper and comes amid continuing national attention on water quality and sewage discharges.

Jo Bateman previously launched legal action against South West Water. She told Radio Newquay that 100 people in the Newquay area have now signed up to join a separate legal claim against the company over alleged sewage pollution.

The claim is being led by Leigh Day and was initially brought on behalf of residents and businesses in Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Lympstone. It has since expanded to include other towns and beaches across South West Water’s region, including Newquay.

South West Water previously told reporters: “Like all our customers, we care deeply about the quality of our region’s bathing waters.”

The company added it fully understood “how important this is to residents, businesses and visitors”.
