MasterChef semi-finalist helps launch Newquay Foodbank community store

A new community store aimed at helping people move beyond emergency food support has opened in Newquay.

The Stores, launched by Newquay Foodbank at the Age UK centre in Crantock Street on Wednesday, will provide low-cost food, practical advice and access to support services for registered foodbank members and people living in temporary accommodation.

Organisers say the project is designed to help people take steps towards greater independence while continuing to access support when needed.

The Stores project lead, Fliss Pearce, said: "It is important at Newquay Foodbank to see people who have needed our help take steps towards regaining their independence through a wraparound approach that begins with a dignified shopping experience.

"We will have a selection of fresh, tinned, chilled and frozen goods at The Stores, and our members can choose to pre-pay for their weekly top-up shop.

"Alongside this, people can seek guidance from other support organisations on matters such as health and finances or simply call in for a cuppa and a natter."

The launch was attended by MasterChef 2026 semi-finalist Frankie Dunn, who prepared a meal for guests and foodbank members using ingredients available through the store.

She cooked beef and vegetable enchiladas followed by fruit crumble.

Ms Dunn said: "I believe everyone should have access to good quality, healthy food that doesn't cost a fortune and I hope to inspire people by cooking a tasty meal from goods they can find at The Stores."

People attending the opening said the project offered more choice than a traditional foodbank and welcomed the availability of fresh food and vegan options.

One member, Joao, said: "I love the variety and choice, and I will definitely be back as this will be really good for me."

The Stores will open every Wednesday with support from Newquay Foodbank volunteers, Age UK staff and partner organisations including FareShare South West and Your Local Pantry.

Volunteer Jan Rogers, who has worked with the foodbank for five years, said the project could help people become more independent.

She said: "Introducing the community store gives them the opportunity to break away from foodbank dependence and the chance to budget their money while becoming more independent and self-sufficient."

Newquay mayor Cllr Drew Creek attended the launch and said: "We know we have people in Newquay that are struggling and this will help them and the many children who are below the poverty line.

"This volunteer supported service is one I am very happy to champion."

Newquay Foodbank is currently running a Crowdfunder campaign to help support the long-term future of the project. You can donate here.
