Pauls eyes world title pathway as Newquay sports stars enjoy mixed fortunes

A Newquay boxer is preparing for a potentially career-defining title defence this weekend, while local cricketers, tennis players, athletes and golfers have all been making headlines in another busy week for sport across the town.

Newquay boxer Brad Pauls is just days away from what could be a career-defining fight.

The "Newquay Bomb" will defend his IBF International Middleweight title against Bradley Goldsmith in Southampton on Saturday evening, with victory potentially moving him a step closer to a world title shot.

Pauls has enjoyed a successful rise through the professional ranks and will be looking to strengthen his position in the middleweight division with another high-profile win.

Meanwhile, it was a mixed weekend for Newquay's cricket teams.

The first team were beaten by 19 runs at Roche after being bowled out for 126 in reply to the hosts' total.

Newquay's second team were also unable to secure victory despite posting a competitive 212 for seven.

There was better news for the club's third team, who produced a dominant all-round performance to thrash Gunnislake by 149 runs.

Elsewhere, St Newlyn East enjoyed a successful afternoon after chasing down a target of 200 against Ludgvan with four wickets to spare.

In tennis, Annie Watson continues to impress after leaving the Heron Tennis Centre to study at Loughborough University.

Recently named Volunteer Coach of the Year, Watson has helped her university team secure both League and Cup titles. She is also currently working as a court supervisor at the prestigious Queen's Club in London.

Newquay and Par masters athletes have also made a strong start to the summer season.

Rich Daniels and Martin Murray both claimed silver medals at the recent British Championships, continuing the club's success on the national stage.

And at Newquay Golf Club, the Hutchinson Cups Mixed Open was won by Gail Cory and Adrian Hamlyn of Looe.

They finished one point clear of two Newquay pairings, who secured second and third places respectively.
