England's top young surfers battled challenging conditions and improving waves at Fistral Beach as the 2026 Caravan and Motorhome Club English National Championships crowned its Under-16 and Under-18 champions.
Competitors faced a difficult start to the day on Saturday, paddling out into gusting winds, light rain and a dropping tide during the morning heats. However, conditions steadily improved throughout the competition, with clean 3ft to 4ft waves and sunshine greeting finalists by the time the podium ceremonies took place at 4pm.
Organisers said the event showcased the depth of talent within English surfing, with athletes competing for national titles across four divisions.
In the Under-16 Girls competition, Lila Skinner claimed the championship ahead of Martha Edwards, Annie Nicholls and Coco Arthur.
Cairo Garcia won the Under-16 Boys title, finishing ahead of Seb Whiteley, Jensen Martin and Harley Miller.
Willow Smith secured victory in the Under-18 Girls division, with Sunny Ingram finishing runner-up ahead of Kaja Millward and Harlyn Sykes.
The Under-18 Boys title went to Heath Gillespie, with Jago Tasker second, Isaac Friend third and Joel Nicholson fourth.
Several competitors delivered standout performances during the event.
In the morning's difficult conditions, Seb Whiteley scored an impressive 8.17 on a sizeable wave, helping him reach the semi-finals. His heat total of 15.84 was the highest score recorded before midday.
Joel Nicholson also impressed in the Under-18 Boys division after progressing from the Under-16 ranks, producing a series of strong performances on his way to the final.
In the Under-18 Girls event, Sunny Ingram consistently posted strong scores throughout the day. However, Willow Smith sealed the title with an outstanding 8.50 on her final wave, earning the highest single-wave score of the competition.
Lila Skinner demonstrated consistency throughout the Under-16 Girls division to secure the championship, while Cairo Garcia's commitment was evident from the outset after arriving early to free surf before registration had even opened.
Organisers praised the standard of competition and thanked athletes, coaches, families and supporters for contributing to the success of the event.
They also thanked headline sponsor the Caravan and Motorhome Club for its continued support of the championships.
