More than 150 athletes are expected to descend on Newquay this weekend for a major surf lifesaving competition that forms part of an international series.

The World Ocean Series Britain stop will take place at Fistral as the second event of the Surf Life Saving Great Britain Surf Series.

As part of the internationally recognised World Ocean Series, the competition will bring together athletes from across the UK and overseas to compete on Newquay's coastline.

Organisers say competitors will face the challenge of Atlantic Ocean conditions in races designed to test endurance, skill and adaptability.

Hosted by Newquay Surf Life Saving Club, athletes will compete across a range of disciplines, including swimming, board racing, ski racing and the prestigious Oceanman and Oceanwoman events.

The competition will also feature a four-person Taplin relay, with teams selected on the day, adding a tactical team element to the event.

A new category has been introduced this year for under-15 competitors.

Known as the Next Gen category, it is designed to help develop future talent by giving young athletes the opportunity to compete in swim and board races on an international stage.

Organisers say the event will showcase British surf lifesaving alongside international competitors, helping to raise the level of competition while providing an opportunity for athletes to test themselves against some of the sport's leading performers.

The World Ocean Series Britain stop takes place on Saturday with most events getting underway from 10am.
