It was a memorable weekend for sport in Newquay, with title celebrations for Newquay AFC’s reserve and third teams, cup success for the club’s women’s side, strong performances on the cricket field and more success for local runners.
Newquay AFC’s reserves and third team were both crowned champions of their respective St Piran League divisions following walkover victories at the weekend.
There was more football success for the club on Sunday as Newquay’s women booked their place in the League Cup final with a nine-three victory over Ludgvan.
In cricket, Newquay’s first team narrowly missed out on victory in County Division One after falling 13 runs short against neighbours Perranporth in their chase of 226.
The town’s second team enjoyed a more successful afternoon at the Sports Centre, beating Tideford by 37 runs. After posting 145, Newquay bowled the visitors out for 108.
St Newlyn East also impressed in Division Five West, securing a dominant 75-run victory over St Just’s third team after dismissing them for just 90.
In hockey, Newquay ladies seconds were edged out in a dramatic Cornwall Plate semi-final against St Austell. The sides were level twice during the match before St Austell scored late on to secure victory.
And at the recent Saltash Half Marathon, Newquay Road Runners enjoyed more success, with Amanda Stevens winning her age category and Peter Allen finishing second in his.
