Students and staff at Newquay Tretherras are celebrating a "strong" set of GCSE results, with the school reporting record outcomes in several subjects.
The school said 38% of students achieved Grade 7 or above in English, while 83% secured at least a Grade 4. Nearly 70% of the year group achieved Grade 4 or above in both English and maths. Newquay Tretherras expects results in English, French, Spanish, computer science and statistics to place those subjects within the top 20% of schools nationally. The school said its creative and vocational subjects had also performed strongly. Headteacher Gemma Harries said: “We are incredibly proud of our students and the exceptional results they have achieved. “These outcomes are a testament to their hard work, determination and ambition, as well as the dedication of our staff and the support of families throughout the school community.” Among the school’s highest-attaining students was Theo C, who achieved seven Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and a Distinction*. He has applied to continue his studies at the school’s NT6 sixth form. Elliot Pope achieved seven Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and one Grade 7 and has also applied to remain at NT6. Missy R received seven Grade 9s, one Grade 8 and two Grade 7s. She plans to study the International Baccalaureate at Truro College. The school also highlighted students it said had made almost three times as much progress as pupils nationally who had similar starting points. They included Finley R, who achieved five Grade 9s, two Grade 8s, one Grade 7 and a Distinction*. He plans to study electronics at Truro College. Mollie P and Rebecca C were also recognised for their progress and have applied to continue their studies at NT6. National tennis champions Oscar W, Blake S and Mathew L were among those receiving results, alongside national surf lifesaver Elliot P. The GCSE results follow what Newquay Tretherras described as its best-ever A-level results last week. The school said 90% of A-level grades were between A* and C, while almost all vocational grades were either Distinction* or Distinction. Mrs Harries added: “To see so many subjects performing at such a high level nationally, alongside another outstanding year for our vocational and creative subjects, is a fantastic achievement. “Our students should be immensely proud of what they have accomplished.”
