RNLI thanks supporters following Newquay Lifeboat Day

The RNLI has thanked the volunteers, organisations and members of the public who supported this year’s Newquay Lifeboat Day.

Crowds gathered at Newquay Harbour on Saturday 8 August for the annual fundraising event, which featured rescue demonstrations, live music and activities throughout the day.

Newquay’s volunteer crew took to the water aboard the station’s two inshore lifeboats, while RNLI lifeguards demonstrated rescue techniques.

Padstow’s all-weather lifeboat also visited the harbour and took part in a demonstration.

The event began with a parade led by Newquay Samba Band, with Lewis Timson towing one of the station’s D-class lifeboats.

It was officially opened by Newquay’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Sarah Thomson.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service brought vehicles and rescue equipment to the harbour, while entertainment included performances by Newquay Samba Band and Newquay Rowing Club Singers.

One of the day’s highlights was the Walker Cup Gig Race between Newquay’s lifeboat crew and Newquay Rowing Club, which was won by the RNLI team.

Volunteer recognised for 20 years’ service

During the event, Newquay RNLI volunteer Janet Kearton was presented with a medal recognising 20 years of service.

The award was presented by Lifeboat Management Group chairman Mark Killingback in recognition of her work as the station’s shop manager and treasurer.

Newquay RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Ian Pengelly described the event as “another great and successful lifeboat day”.

The station thanked everyone who helped organise and support the event, including volunteers, local groups, emergency services and members of the public.

It said: “The hard work that goes on behind the scenes is huge, and seeing the harbour filled with people enjoying themselves makes it all worthwhile.”
