Fire crews tackle wildfires at Mawgan Porth and Porth

Fire crews tackled two outdoor fires on Tuesday afternoon as residents were urged to remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to a “significant fire” between the golf club and solar farm at Mawgan Porth at about 4pm. The blaze was brought under control by firefighters.

The service said there was a large plume of smoke and asked people not to travel to the area.

At about 4.40pm, crews were also called to a fire in woodland near Porth.

People living close to that incident were advised to stay indoors and close their windows.

Radio Newquay eyewitnesses said smoke could be seen and smelt from Porth beach, which was busy with holidaymakers.

Firefighters attended another outdoor blaze near Bodmin earlier in the day.

Kernow Weather Team said winds were reaching between 15 and 35mph and warned that the wildfire risk across Cornwall remained very high.

It said the county was extremely dry following a prolonged lack of significant rainfall, allowing grass, heathland and other vegetation to catch fire and spread quickly.
