Cliff Road improvement works to begin in September

The next phase of work to improve Cliff Road in Newquay will begin in September and is expected to continue until late spring 2027.

The scheme, which forms part of the Mid Cornwall Metro project, will cover the section of Cliff Road between Oakleigh Terrace and Edgcumbe Avenue.

Site preparations are due to begin at the end of August, before construction starts on 7 September.

The project will include a new cycle route, wider footways, public-space improvements and a new pedestrian crossing.

Kerbs will be relocated and changes made to the road layout, alongside drainage, utility, resurfacing and road-marking work.

A one-way system will operate on Cliff Road for most of the construction period, with traffic permitted to travel away from the town centre.

Drivers heading towards the town centre will follow a signed diversion.

Lane closures and temporary traffic lights may also be needed during some stages of the work.

Pedestrian access will be maintained, although temporary changes may occasionally be required. The project team said affected properties would be contacted in advance.

Existing on-street parking will be removed from sections of Cliff Road to make space for wider footways, shared routes and additional crossing points.

Cornwall Council says eight new on-street spaces have been created on Oakleigh Terrace, offering up to one hour of free parking and the free period at Newquay Railway Station car park has increased from 20 to 30 minutes.

Three new disabled spaces have also been provided outside Wetherspoons, where the existing free parking period has been extended from 30 minutes to one hour.

The authority says the target completion date is late spring 2027, although the timetable remains dependent on work involving utility providers.

The project team acknowledged that Cliff Road was a key route into Newquay and said it would try to minimise disruption while keeping road users, pedestrians and workers safe.
