A Newquay family are encouraging people to support a major fundraising event held in memory of their four-year-old son.
The Joe Way Paddle for Life was set up in memory of Joe Way, who was born with a rare genetic condition, Angelman’s syndrome, and died on 7 May 2008 aged four.
Since 2008, the event has raised £188,000 for charitable causes, growing into what organisers describe as a “powerful story of community, resilience and positive impact”. Each year, people come together not only to remember Joe, but to celebrate his life and support others in his name.
The paddle, which began as a way for family, friends and RNLI volunteers to come together, has since grown into a large community fundraiser at Newquay Harbour.
Joe’s family said: “Living with the loss of Joe is something that never leaves you. It’s been a varied and often difficult road, but what has carried us through is the support of the community and the ability to turn that loss into something positive. The paddle is about celebrating Joe’s life, not just remembering his passing.”
They say the event has become a celebration of life and community, attracting participants and supporters from across Cornwall and beyond.
The family are inviting people to get involved by taking part, supporting on the day or contributing to the associated online prize draw.
The Joe Way Paddle for Life will take place on Thursday 18 June at Newquay Harbour from 15:00 BST. The event features water-based activities involving local surf lifesaving clubs, RNLI lifeguards and paddlers of all ages and abilities, alongside live music, food, charity stalls and family entertainment.
Organisers are also encouraging more businesses to get involved as £500 sponsors, with contributions going directly into the charity fundraising pot.
