Newquay carnival and mile race return to town this weekend

Carnival 2025 featuring Newquay's Land Train for the last time

The Newquay Lions Community Carnival will return to the streets of the town this weekend, with organisers promising an evening of colour, music and community spirit.

This year's event, themed Carnival by the Coast, takes place on Saturday and will see a parade through the town centre from Fore Street, along Bank Street, East Street, Cliff Road and Narrowcliff, before finishing at Barrowfields.

The procession gets underway at 6pm.

Before the parade, the Newquay Carnival Mile will make a welcome return after an absence of more than two decades.

The one-mile race, supported by Newquay Road Runners, starts outside the Fort Inn on Fore Street at 5:55pm and finishes at Barrowfields.

Organisers say the event was last held in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it regularly attracted hundreds of runners and large crowds. The revived race is open to runners of all abilities, but entries must be booked in advance and there will be no entries on the day.

Temporary road closures will be in place along the route from around 5:30pm until 8pm.

Alistair McKenna from Newquay Lions said local businesses had been very supportive of this year's event.

The carnival also coincides with First Wave: Newquay Sessions, organised by Newquay Town Council, with live music on the Killacourt throughout the day and the Big Market taking place across the town centre.

Alistair McKenna, Chair of Newquay Lions Carnival Committee says they've had some support all through the town from local businesses. PRESS PLAY TO LISTEN...
