Newquay and Crantock secure top-four finishes at national surf lifesaving championships

Newquay and Crantock secured top-four finishes during a week of national surf lifesaving competition at Holywell Bay.

Thousands of competitors and supporters attended the 2026 National Championships, which brought together clubs from across the country.

Newquay finished fourth overall in the National Nipper Championships, with hosts Holywell Bay taking sixth place. Woolacombe won the overall title.

In the Masters competition, Crantock produced a strong performance to finish third. Holywell Bay were fourth, while Bude were crowned champions.

In football, Newquay AFC recovered from two goals down to secure a 3-3 draw away to Sidmouth Town in the Western League.

Callam McOnie scored a late equaliser for the Peppermints.

Newquay’s second team won 2-1 away to Saltash United in the St Piran League, while St Newlyn East recorded a 4-1 victory at Launceston.

In the South West Peninsula League, St Mawgan were beaten 3-0 at home by Holsworthy.

Newquay Cricket Club suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Truro in County Division One.

Newquay were dismissed for 145, with Adam Jenkin top-scoring with 45, before Truro successfully chased down the target.

The Division Five West match between St Newlyn East and Helston was abandoned after Helston had reached 86 for four from 27 overs.

Meanwhile, Newquay Hornets’ annual Max Cowell Memorial Match was cancelled because of unsuitable pitch conditions.

The rugby club said the decision was taken following official guidance, with player safety having to come first. Its teams are continuing preparations for the new season.
