Mixed weekend for local sport as hundreds take part in gig championships

Hundreds of crews, including teams from Newquay, took part in the World Pilot Gig Championships over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The event, held on the Isles of Scilly, saw 481 crews competing, with rowers travelling from across the world, including the USA.

Falmouth won the men’s final, ending Looe’s six-year winning streak, while Helford River defended their title in the women’s race after a close finish with Fowey.

In cricket, the opening day of the new Cornwall Cricket League season was heavily affected by poor weather.

All four of Newquay’s sides saw their matches abandoned, with the first team managing just 8.3 overs before rain stopped play.

In football, promoted St Mawgan strengthened their position in the St Piran League Premier Division with a 4-2 home win over Gunnislake.

Newquay AFC reserves are on the verge of Division One glory following a 16-0 victory over Launceston.

St Newlyn East also continued their strong run of form, recording a 6-1 win at Boscastle to make it seven consecutive victories and move into fifth place in Division One.
