A long-running and quirky Cornish fundraiser returns to Crantock on Friday night for its 25th year.
The Crantock Bale Push, which has raised more than £171,500 since it began in 2000, will be supporting Cornwall Hospice Care and a range of local good causes.
The event sees teams of four rolling a giant round straw bale, weighing around 420lbs and measuring 4ft 6in in diameter, through the village. The course runs a quarter of a mile between the two pubs, taking competitors up and down hills.
The evening begins at 5pm with junior races, including under-8s, under-12s and under-16s, followed by the ladies’ event. From around 7.30pm the open teams and veterans take on the full course.
Live entertainment includes a performance from 1940s-style crooner Andy Marshall, with bands Black Velvet and The Quest playing later in the evening at the Old Albion and The Cornishman.
Chairperson Nigel Eustice said it was “great to see the Bale Push Man back at the Crantock turning to celebrate our 25th Bale Push – he always brings a smile to people’s faces”.
He added: “The total raised by the Crantock Bale Push since 2000 now tops over an incredible £171,500 which has all been donated to Cornish charities and local organisations.”
Organisers say the Bale Push has become an essential part of village life, offering fun, competition and fundraising. Teams can enter on the evening, with parking available at the Village Hall.
