Parking charges are to be introduced at several Newquay car parks which are currently free during the winter months.
Members of Cornwall Council’s cabinet have backed the move, despite concerns raised by business groups and local councillors.
Under the plans, charges will apply at Tregunnel Hill, Albany Road, Dane Road and Watergate Bay during the quieter season. Belmont car park will remain free.
Cornwall Council said: “Following discussions with local council members, it was decided that Belmont Car Park would remain free, to mitigate the impact this change would have on the town.”
The decision forms part of the council’s Off-Street Parking Order for 2026.
The authority said: “Whilst there were a significant number of objections to these initiatives, it is recognised that these changes will support the provision of the wider Parking Service and support investment into these car parks.”
Joanna Kenny, Cornwall councillor for Newquay Central and Pentire, said she had raised concerns about the potential impact on the town.
“I was there to do battle as I’ve heard mutterings about it. Not a case of the loudest voice – I like to think it was a combined and consistent approach from Newquay that included the Town Council and the Newquay BID about the danger to our struggling winter economy – and some shouting!” she said.
Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) manager Mark Warren said the organisation opposed the plans.
“This is despite clear feedback from the BID and local councillors that these charges would mainly impact our local businesses and residents, the very people who need support during the quieter winter months,” he said.
“We believe this decision is misguided and could have a real negative effect on our local economy.
“We will be strongly opposing this and continuing to stand up for our businesses and community.”
The updated parking order also confirms the introduction of charges for overnight stays in motorhomes at 10 car parks across Cornwall.
The move follows a trial at Crescent car park in Bude and will be introduced at locations where there has been demand, including Watergate Bay near Newquay.
The council has not said when the new charges will come into effect.
