Para surfers from across England and Europe gathered at Fistral Beach in Newquay on Saturday for the 2026 English Para Surfing Open.
Competitors took to the waves in a full day of competition, with athletes, volunteers and spectators enjoying sunny conditions and consistent surf. Among the standout performances were members of England's Para Development Squad. Abbie Potts, from the North East of England, claimed victory in the Open Prone Women division after coming from third place to first during her final, while fellow North East surfer Finn Jones won the Open VI category following a tactical surfboard change midway through his final. One of the stories of the day came from Cameron Treble, who finished runner-up in the Open Prone division despite it being only his second time competing in para surfing. Organisers described his performance against experienced competitors as one of the highlights of the competition. In the Para Classified divisions, Afonso Faria took victory in the Para Prone 2 final after producing a combined score of 11.40. Pedro Palmer finished just 0.6 points behind in second place following a closely contested final. England's Para Development Squad also impressed throughout the event, with Zoe Smith, Melissa Reid, Harlum Lewis and Natasha Davies all securing victories in their respective categories. Organisers said the event showcased both the standard of para surfing in England and the strong sense of community within the sport. They also thanked the volunteers, judges, support organisations and sponsors who helped make the competition possible, including The Wave Project, Surfability UK, AdSurf, Fistral Beach, Era Adventures and The Hangout Newquay.
