Two people die after being recovered from the sea at South Fistral

Two people have died after being recovered from the sea at South Fistral in Newquay.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called by the South Western Ambulance Service at around 9.45pm on Sunday, 26 July, following reports that a man and a woman had been brought ashore from the water.

Police, ambulance crews, Coastguard teams and Newquay RNLI attended the incident. A police cordon was put in place overnight but has since been removed.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Sadly, a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their families have been informed, and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.

"A file will be prepared for HM Coroner."

Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes were tasked to the scene, along with Newquay RNLI lifeboats, a Coastguard rescue helicopter, Devon and Cornwall Police and the South Western Ambulance Service.

Padstow Coastguard said: "The team were tasked to join Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team with an incident in South Fistral.

"Newquay RNLI lifeboats, Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924, Devon & Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and HM Coastguard duty officers were also in attendance. St Agnes Coastguard Search and Rescue Team were tasked later into the evening and were stood down on route.

"No further details will be provided.

"Our thoughts are with those involved."

Police said a file will now be prepared for the Coroner.
