Van occupants ordered to leave Newquay car park by Friday afternoon

People living in vans at a Newquay car park have been given until Friday afternoon to leave the site.

Cornwall Council says legal notices have been served on the occupants of 31 vans at Towan Head car park, which includes Little Fistral.

A council spokesperson said: "We have served notice to the occupants of 31 vans at Towan Head car park in Newquay.

"The occupants have until Friday at 4pm to vacate the site."

The move comes after a video shared on social media appeared to show legal notices being taped to the windows of vehicles parked at the site.

Last week, the Local Democracy Reporter Service reported that Cornwall Council, supported by Devon and Cornwall Police, was investigating allegations that some drivers staying overnight at Towan Headland had covered their vehicle registration plates in an attempt to avoid overnight parking charges.

Earlier this month, Radio Newquay spoke to one man who has lived in both properties and vans in the Newquay area for more than 20 years and runs a landscaping business.

He said he wanted to challenge perceptions of people living in vans, arguing there is an important distinction between those who live in vehicles permanently and visitors staying in the area during the holiday season.

He also said Cornwall Council's existing overnight parking provision for motorhomes did not go far enough.

It is not yet known what action the council will take if the vehicles remain on site after Friday's deadline.
