Concerns raised over anti-social behaviour near Newquay's new play park

Newquay Town Council is urging residents to report anti-social behaviour to the authorities following concerns about unauthorised camping near the town's new children's play area at Mount Wise.

The council said it was aware of issues linked to camping activity on Cornwall Council-owned land opposite the new play park.

In a statement, the authority said it was working with Cornwall Council and would also raise concerns with the local neighbourhood policing team.

The council said: "We are aware of anti-social behaviour issues associated with unauthorised camping activity on Cornwall Council land opposite Newquay Town Council's new children's play area at Mount Wise."

It said concerns raised by residents included wider issues associated with alcohol and drug use.

Residents are being encouraged to report anti-social behaviour directly to Cornwall Council or Devon & Cornwall Police, rather than confronting individuals themselves.

The council added: "We would ask members of the public not to take matters into their own hands or place themselves at risk by directly confronting individuals. Please report any concerns through the appropriate channels so they can be addressed by the relevant authorities."

People are advised to call 101 for non-emergency police matters or 999 if someone is in immediate danger, feels threatened or a crime is in progress.

The concerns come as work continues on a major improvement project at Mount Wise Gardens.

In May, Newquay Town Council began work on a new children's play area as part of a wider regeneration scheme for the site.

The project includes a £150,000 investment in the play park, funded by Boardmasters and Community Infrastructure Levy contributions from developers.

Mayor Drew Creek previously described the facility as "an investment in our children's futures", saying it would create the first central play park within easy walking distance of Newquay town centre.
