St Mawgan Football Club have secured promotion to the South West Peninsula League for the first time in their history, while there were also strong results for Newquay AFC Reserves, the Newquay Hornets and the town’s cricketers over the weekend.
St Mawgan sealed their place with a 2-0 win over Sticker in midweek, before confirming the step up with a 3-1 victory away at Kilkhampton on Saturday.
Newquay AFC Reserves remain on course for silverware, sitting five points clear at the top of St Piran League Division One. They recorded a 7-1 win over Lifton, with Ben Shaw scoring a hat-trick. Ollie Butterworth added two, while Ross Fallens and Rohan Golay also found the net.
In rugby union, Newquay Hornets edged a close contest against Wadebridge Camels, winning 29-28 at the Nest in their final league match of the season.
Meanwhile, Newquay’s cricketers warmed up for the new campaign with a narrow victory over touring side Romans CC. Tom Owen marked his debut with an unbeaten 53 and figures of 3-6, while Chris Jordan added 40 not out. Contributions also came from Aaron Hawken and 13-year-old Alfie Cullen, as Newquay posted 151-2 before bowling Romans out for 146.
