Plans to bring Newquay’s two GP surgeries under one roof have been abandoned, with the Narrowcliff Surgery exploring the possibility of a solo project.
Originally, both surgeries were set to co-locate to land adjacent to Trevenson Road, on the edge of Nansledan.
The seafront site currently occupied by the Narrowcliff Surgery is part of a larger redevelopment project, including the former Hotel Bristol, which will be converted into apartments following planning approval earlier this year.
Although the initial proposal was for both surgeries to remain separate but share a new facility, rumours of stalled negotiations surfaced weeks ago.
In a joint statement issued to Radio Newquay, a spokesperson said:
"As things stand, Narrowcliff Surgery and Newquay Health Centre won’t be progressing with plans to co-locate our surgeries to a site at Nansledan, because it no longer appears viable."
"Both our organisations remain committed to delivering General Practice services in Newquay. All our services are running as normal, and patients should attend their appointments as usual."
The statement also mentions that both practices will liaise with "patients, patient participation groups, NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, health partners, Newquay Town Council, and other stakeholders" following this decision.
In an earlier response to our questions, Newquay Health Centre said the decision was down to "money" as the "Narrowcliff surgery have a generous offer from a developer for their existing site which means that financially they are in an optimal position to move and there appears to be pressure for this to happen quickly."
Newquay Health Centre will continue operating from its St Thomas Road site while exploring funding options to improve and make the most of its existing space.
The news that one surgery will remain closer to the town centre is likely to be welcomed by residents, many of whom expressed concern about both surgeries moving further east.
