Newquay Lions hopes to establish new branch in Nansledan

Newquay Lions Club is looking for people interested in helping to establish a new branch in Nansledan.

The organisation is holding an information event and meet-and-greet at Nansledan Community Centre on Wednesday 2 September at 7pm.

The proposed branch would initially operate under the umbrella of Newquay Lions Club, with the longer-term aim of being run by people living in the Nansledan community.

Andy Hannan, President of Newquay Lions Club, said the organisation believed the growing community could benefit from having its own branch.

He said: “We believe Nansledan is quite a thriving, growing community, and Newquay Lions would like to investigate whether it would be beneficial to that community to set up a branch club within Nansledan itself.”

There are currently two active Lions clubs in Newquay, with a combined membership of around 60 people.

Newquay Lions has been operating for 54 years and raises money for local good causes as well as providing volunteers and support for community events.

Mr Hannan said: “The motto of Lions is ‘We Serve’, so our first priority is to serve our local community, but we also fundraise and distribute that money to local good causes.”

The club was has brought back Newquay Carnival and also provides marshals for a number of parades and events in the town.

Under the plans, Newquay Lions would initially provide the organisation and infrastructure for the Nansledan branch, including support with secretary and treasurer roles.

Mr Hannan said the hope was that local people would eventually take responsibility for the branch and concentrate its work on Nansledan.

“If it gets enough momentum, there’s no reason why it cannot become Nansledan Lions,” he added.

Members must be aged 18 or over, although there is no upper age limit.

Mr Hannan said the club was looking for people who cared about their community and wanted to get involved, adding that membership also had a social side.

Anyone interested can attend the event at Nansledan Community Centre from 7pm on Wednesday.

The event is open to everyone, with free cake, tea and coffee available.
