Search begins for Newquay's new town crier

The search is under way for a new town crier to become Newquay's official ceremonial ambassador.

Newquay Town Council is inviting residents to apply for the role, which will involve representing the town at civic events, community celebrations, commemorations and official engagements.

The successful applicant will deliver proclamations and announcements, welcome dignitaries and visitors, support mayoral events and promote local initiatives.

The council said it was looking for someone with strong public speaking skills, enthusiasm for community engagement and an interest in maintaining the tradition of town crying.

'Big shoes to fill'

The new recruit will succeed Simon Anderson Jones, who the council described as having been "truly spectacular" in the role.

"Whoever steps into the role will have some very big shoes to fill," a council spokesperson said.

"This is a wonderful chance for someone who loves Newquay and enjoys being out among people to become a valued and visible part of our town's life.

"If you have confidence, enthusiasm and a real community spirit, we'd love to hear from you."

Applications are open until 16 September, with forms available from Newquay Library or the town council's website.

Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to put their voices to the test in a Town Crier Competition on the Killacourt on Saturday 19 September.

Candidates will demonstrate their presentation skills, confidence and vocal ability in front of judges and members of the public, before Newquay's new town crier is selected.
