Gas pipe upgrade work has begun in several roads around Newquay Zoo. Wales & West Utilities says the scheme is aimed at ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses.
The work started at the end of March and is expected to continue until February next year.
The project has been planned with Cornwall Council and will involve traffic management measures at various points. Motorists may encounter “give and take” systems on Billings Drive, Clemens Close, Carter Close and Bedowan Meadows when required.
Rolling multi-way traffic lights are also scheduled at different stages of the work:
- Towan Blystra Road from 18 May to 8 December
- Tretherras Road from 29 June to 17 August
- Dukes Way from 7 September to 23 October
- Trerice Drive from 9 November to 16 February 2027
The wider programme forms part of a £3.2m investment to upgrade more than 25km of gas pipes across Newquay over the next two years.
Natalie Raphael, who is managing the work for Wales & West Utilities, said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
People who smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide are advised to call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.
