A new mural has been unveiled in Newquay town centre as part of the MUQY Street Art Walking Trail.
The artwork, created by mural artist and designer Josephine Hicks (Hixxy), is located on Gover Lane and was completed on Monday.
The MUQY project, which launched in 2024, features murals in various locations around the town, each connected via QR codes as part of a free walking trail. The latest addition, produced by Slapdash Studio and funded by Cornwall Council’s Town Delivery Fund, depicts local themes including tourism, RNLI lifeguards, hospitality workers, and dog walkers in Hixxy’s bold and surrealist style.
Mark Warren, Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) Manager, said: “We are so excited to officially unveil the fourth mural in Newquay. We hope you agree it is a striking piece that speaks to the locals, whilst providing a fun and colourful lift to the street. Just like the others, it is thought-provoking with depth and place-specific meaning. We have exciting plans for MUQY, with more sites set to launch in 2025, and we look forward to continuing to build on this legacy.”
The initial concept was developed by BID board member Dirk Parker and Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studio, with funding from Experience Newquay. Tierney worked with a roster of street artists to bring the first three murals to life, including Kleiner Shames, Elle Koziupa, and 45 RPM.
The expanded project is now being delivered by Newquay BID and funded by Cornwall Council’s Town Delivery Fund. Plans are in place to develop MUQY further in 2025, with more murals set to be added. Warren added: “We have exciting plans to develop MUQY further in 2025 with more murals set to grace the town. More detail on this will be revealed in the near future.”
