Plans to replace the clubhouse at Crantock Surf Life Saving Club have received widespread backing, including support from the RNLI, Surf Life Saving Great Britain and members of the local community.
A planning application has been submitted for a new off-grid, prefabricated building to replace the current timber hut, which dates back to the 1980s and is no longer considered suitable due to changing coastal conditions and shifting sand dunes.
Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) has expressed strong support for the proposal, describing the club as highly valued within its national network. It says the redevelopment would provide fit-for-purpose facilities, improving training, equipment storage and support for volunteers, while strengthening the club’s ability to promote water safety and protect beach users.
Support has also been given by RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for Newquay, Lewis Timson.
He said:
"The RNLI add their full support to this application. Crantock is one of the Newquay services highest risk beaches and the service reflected that by extending the Lifeguard service season to help mitigate some risk. Having better facilities will not only support the surf club it will greatly improve the observations and welfare of the Lifeguard team, which at its peak is 6 Lifeguards using the facility on a daily basis and over a 7 month period of the year. The improved observations towards the river Gannel is a lifesaving improvement and cannot be underestimated as a benefit to the facility and the service. We hope this planning is approved and the safety of the beach receives a significant improvement in lifesaving facilities."
The club has also thanked volunteers who turned out to support a DIY day over the weekend of 25 and 26 April to help prepare the existing clubhouse for the season ahead.
It said:
"A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our DIY Day on Sunday to help get the clubhouse ready for the season ahead. The hut is looking its best, and it was great to see so many people getting involved. The BBQ and cakes went down a treat, and a few even made the most of the sunshine with a sea dip too. Bring on summer season!"
The proposed replacement building would remain within the existing footprint to minimise any impact on the surrounding dune habitat.
