The Burger King restaurant at Station Approach in Newquay has closed for the final time, a day earlier than originally planned.
Staff at the site confirmed the closure to Radio Newquay on Saturday evening (10th January). The restaurant, next to Newquay Railway Station, had been expected to shut later this weekend, but the staff member cited a lack of staff available for the original closing date.
The closure follows the end of the lease on the building, with reports last month confirming that it would not be renewed. Burger King’s franchise at the Morrisons petrol station in Newquay remains open and is not affected.
News of the early closure prompted an outpouring of reaction on social media, with many residents sharing memories of the restaurant and its place in the town.
Commenting on a Facebook post by Radio Newquay, several people described the closure as “sad”, saying the restaurant had been a familiar part of Newquay for years and a popular stop for those arriving by train. Others spoke about the convenience of the location, particularly late at night or during busy summer months.
Some residents, however, were more philosophical, suggesting the closure was inevitable and reflecting on the changing nature of the town centre. A number of commenters said they hoped the site would now be redeveloped or replaced with something new that would benefit the area.
The Burger King on Station Approach had been operating for around 30 years and was one of the most recognisable fast-food outlets in the town. Before this, the outlet was a Wimpy Burger Bar since the 1970s. While its closure marks the end of an era for that site, Burger King customers will still be able to visit the franchise at the Morrisons petrol station on Treloggan Road.
It is not yet known what will replace the former restaurant building. Radio Newquay has approached Burger King for comment.
