Huer's Hut to glow red and yellow for 25 years of RNLI lifeguards

The iconic Huer's Hut in Newquay will be lit up in red and yellow tonight to celebrate 25 years of RNLI lifeguards helping to keep beachgoers safe.

The landmark on King Edward Crescent will be illuminated from 7.30pm and will be visible across Newquay Bay.

The RNLI's beach lifeguard service began as a pilot scheme in the summer of 2001, with patrols on 26 popular beaches across south-west England. While some beaches already had local authority and lifesaving club patrols, the charity said there was a need for a larger, coordinated service.

The pilot proved successful, with RNLI lifeguards helping 3,520 people and saving 20 lives during that first summer.

Since then, the RNLI says its lifeguards have saved more than 2,000 lives and helped keep people safe on beaches more than 48 million times.

The celebrations continue on Saturday with a free pirate-themed family event at Fistral Beach from 10.30am.

Visitors are being encouraged to dress as pirates, with prizes for the best male and female costumes. The event will also feature a tug of war, beach games and water safety activities for all ages.

Donations will be welcomed to support the RNLI's lifesaving work.
