Newquay has been given a splash of colour with a a giant new mural in the town centre.
It's part of a project called MUQY which will see a further two murals created at locations in the coming weeks.
The mural, located at MIX on East Street, has already been attracting attention, with its design inspired by ideas generated during an August workshop hosted by Youth Art Connect. The initiative is part of the "Experience Newquay" project and the upcoming Be Newquay Festival, with funding from the Government's Shared Prosperity Fund.
MUQY is led by Slapdash Studios, and local artists Kleiner Shames, Elle Koziupa, and 45 RPM will each contribute their creative flair to Newquay's town centre. The murals, celebrating Newquay’s heritage and identity, will be painted over the next few weeks and unveiled in time for the Be Newquay Festival in November. The festival will feature a free Street Art walking trail, linking the three murals as part of the town’s creative celebrations.
Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studios has been telling us more about the creative process. In our special report (below), he reveals more about the "photo realistic" second mural which will be created in the coming weeks.
The Be Newquay Festival, in November, is a month-long celebration of the town’s creative spirit. Events will take place across different venues, with a mix of street art workshops, live shows, exhibitions, and outdoor activities. Many of the events will be free or low-cost, ensuring accessibility for all.
The festival is curated by Cornwall Council’s "Experience Newquay" project, the festival aims to engage the local community and visitor numbers into the quieter tourism months. The initiative has been supported through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
