Organisers of the annual New Year Dip for CLIC have raised over £2,500 for the children's cancer charity Young Lives vs Cancer.
Despite a windy and wet start to the new year, more than 300 people gathered at Newquay Harbour for the 11th dip.
This year, many participants donned colourful fancy dress costumes and swimwear for the occasion. A spokesperson for the Newquay Young Lives vs Cancer fundraising group said:
“It is fantastic that so many members of our community support our event and what a great way to start 2025. Some of our dippers have taken part since the very first dip, and it is great to see so many old friends return time and time again. Each year we have dippers from the Newquay area and visitors from all over the country who include our event as part of their holiday activities.”
Sam Galsworthy, High Sheriff of Cornwall, and Newquay Town Crier Simon Anderson called the dippers to the beach for the official countdown. After a false start, the participants ran into the water, where they paddled, dipped, and swam under the watchful eyes of Newquay Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards.
The large crowd, braving the rain, clapped and cheered until the last swimmer exited the water.
The total raised, including entry fees, sponsorships, and donations, exceeds £2,500. The funds will go directly towards providing care and support for children undergoing treatment and their families.
