Work is underway on a new play park in central Newquay following a groundbreaking ceremony at Mount Wise Gardens.
Newquay Town Mayor Drew Creek officially broke ground on the project after the site was recently devolved from Cornwall Council to Newquay Town Council.
The £150,000 scheme is being funded through developer contributions (CIL), alongside £50,000 from the Boardmasters Foundation.
The project follows a period of public consultation and community engagement, with the town council saying feedback from residents helped shape the final plans.
Newquay Town Council says the regeneration scheme will transform Mount Wise Gardens into a more welcoming and accessible community space, centred around a new inclusive play area for children and families.
The wider improvements are also intended to encourage outdoor activity, social interaction and greater use of the gardens by both residents and visitors.

Mayor Drew Creek said the project would provide the first play park for central Newquay.
“We are breaking ground today, day one, on our brand-new play park for central Newquay at Mount Wise Gardens,” he said.
“Central Newquay doesn’t have any play parks. It’s five minutes’ walk from the High Street. This is a really important space, one that’s been underutilised and not well looked after over the years.”
He added that the park would include areas designed for different age groups, ranging from infants to children aged 12 and 13, using robust timber play equipment intended to last for decades.
Ruth, the Community Liaison from Boardmasters, said: “It’s absolutely fabulous to be involved and see the improvements in the town and see what wonderful things the Boardmasters Foundation can do for its home place.”
