Members of Newquay Women's Surf Club are celebrating this Christmas Day after receiving a £500 grant from the Newquay Lottery Community Grant Scheme.
The all-female, community interest, non-profit surf club provides "an inclusive and welcoming social vibe, open to women of all ages, abilities, and locations." The club offers professional, fun, and affordable weekly surf lessons, as well as weekend surf trips within the UK and Europe. Based in Newquay, the club operates from the family-owned Quiksilver Surf School and surfs at South Fistral Beach.
The club plans to use the grant to purchase additional equipment, enabling them to reach more young girls and women and continue providing sessions for the community. This will help ensure that they can supply equipment to all participants, maintaining financial inclusivity and accessibility. Additionally, the funds will be used to increase the number of subsidised places available for both the Women's Surf Club and the Little Ladies Surf Club, which caters to girls aged 7-16.
This £500 grant is the third announced this month, made possible by players of the Newquay Lottery. Launched in 2020 to support Radio Newquay and other local good causes, the lottery now boasts hundreds of players.
