It was a mixed weekend for Newquay’s sports sides, with cup disappointment for the veterans but key wins elsewhere keeping momentum going.
Newquay Veterans were beaten 5-0 by Gunnislake in the Cornwall Sunday Cup final.
The defending champions had been hoping to retain the title after last year’s success, but were unable to find a way past a strong Gunnislake side.
The match was played at Launceston, where Gunnislake took control to secure the trophy.
Newquay had gone into the game aiming to lift the cup for a second consecutive year, but saw their title defence come to an end.
Meanwhile, in other local sport…
Newquay AFC closed the gap to the Western League play-off places to six points with a 2-1 home win over Brislington.
Goals from Al Ahmed and Harry Downing secured the victory for the Peppermints, keeping them in touch with fifth-placed Sidmouth, with games in hand.
St Mawgan moved up to second in the St Piran League Premier Division after a 4-1 win over Looe Town.
St Newlyn East were also in winning form, with goals from Jack Thompson and Jay Manning giving them a 2-0 victory over Liskeard Athletic.
In rugby, Newquay Hornets made it two wins in a row with a 36-31 victory over St Just in a closely contested match.
And in hockey, it was a mixed set of results for Newquay’s ladies sides. The first team were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Plymouth Lions, while the thirds recorded a 3-2 win away at Truro.
