Newquay Foodbank has launched a Crowdfunder campaign to help create a new low-cost supermarket aimed at supporting people towards financial independence.
The initiative, called a community pantry, will initially be open to foodbank users and people living in temporary accommodation while organisers assess demand and trial the scheme.
The charity says it needs to raise £6500 in its Crowdfunder appeal to set up the pantry “from the ground up”, including essential equipment such as fridges, freezers and shelving, alongside initial stock, staff training and setup costs linked to its partnership with Your Local Pantry.
The pantry will operate from the Age UK Centre on Crantock Street every Wednesday between 11.30am and 2.30pm.
Organisers said the aim was to help people move beyond emergency food provision by offering affordable shopping with greater choice and dignity.

A spokesperson said: “We want to help people move beyond food banks.
“We are aiming to help people transition from free emergency food provision to affordable, dignified shopping which offers choice, stability and a stepping stone towards financial independence.”
People using the pantry will need to register as members, although organisers say vouchers will not be required. Membership can be completed online in advance or on the day with support available for people filling out the forms.
The first shop will be free for members.
After that, shopping for a single person or couple will cost £7 and allow customers to choose 10 items, while family shops will cost £10 for 15 items. Fresh fruit and vegetables will also be included.
The food will come from partnerships with organisations including FareShare, alongside bulk purchases and public donations.
Organisers say stock will vary from week to week and could include fresh food, household essentials and cupboard items.
The pantry will also include a café area and access to advice services, with support available on debt, bills and benefits, alongside future plans for budgeting and healthy eating guidance.
The charity is currently raising money through a Crowdfunder campaign to help launch the project.
