Newquay AFC secure sixth place finish on Western League return

Newquay AFC have secured a sixth-place finish in their first season back in the Western League after a 2-0 victory over Shepton Mallet.

Goals from Jack Bray-Evans and Matt Searle ensured the Peppermints ended the campaign on a high in front of a crowd of 576, the second highest attendance at Mount Wise this season.

The result means Newquay finish the season with 17 wins from their 34 league matches, marking a strong return to Step 5 football.

Elsewhere, St Mawgan suffered a setback in the St Piran’s League Premier Division, losing 4-0 at home to Saltash United seconds.

Newquay AFC reserves maintained their position at the top of Division One with an emphatic 11-0 win away at St Dominick, opening up a five-point lead over second-placed Nanpean Rovers.

St Newlyn East extended their winning run to five matches with a 2-1 victory over Saltash United thirds.

In rugby union, Newquay Hornets Colts won the County Plate after a 21-17 victory over Perranporth. Wilson Atkinson, Freddie Harrow and Kittow Lewis each scored tries, with Lewis also adding a conversion. Ed Eyre was named player of the match and kicked twice to help secure the win.

Meanwhile, Newquay boxer Brad Pauls has indicated a further major fight announcement could be imminent after signing with promoter Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions.

Pauls recently claimed the IBF International middleweight title with a ninth-round stoppage victory over Shakiel Thompson.
