Newquay has become the first town in Cornwall to take part in a national scheme aimed at improving safety in bars, pubs and clubs.
Police in the town have supported the introduction of Best Bar None, a nationally recognised programme designed to hold licensed premises to high standards. The scheme assesses venues on a range of measures, including customer safety, the use of security systems such as CCTV, the quality of staff training, and processes in place to safeguard women and girls.
Since its launch in Newquay in spring this year, five local businesses have taken part in the assessment, with all achieving Best Bar None accreditation. Certificates were presented this month to Project 83, the Sailors Arms, Walkabout, the Red Lion and Towan Blystra.
Inspector Steve Johnson, who presented the accreditations, said:
“Congratulations to all the businesses who have received an accreditation.
I believe that this scheme will be another factor in helping us all to create a safer and more welcoming night life experience in Newquay.
It’s encouraging to see that these businesses have all met the high-quality standards necessary, including the important safety measures to help keep their customers and staff safe.”
Police alcohol licensing officer Sue Edwards said the scheme benefits both the public and businesses:
“Not only does the assessment provide customers with reassurance, but it’s a useful way for businesses to find out how to improve customer safety and experience.”
Chris Hancock, from the Sailors Arms, said:
“We are happy and proud to support Best Bar None and also to attain the level required for accreditation. We look forward to seeing the programme develop in the coming years as more and more businesses come on board.
It is very positive for the hospitality industry in Newquay. Thank you to everyone involved.”
Best Bar None is an independent, nationally accredited programme. While supported locally by police, all assessments in Newquay are carried out by independent representatives of the scheme.
