Newquay AFC held as town sides battle for points across football, rugby and hockey

Newquay AFC were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Barnstaple Town in front of 316 fans on Saturday, leaving Shaun Middleton’s side seventh in the Western League Premier Division.

Newquay women also shared the points, battling to a 2-2 draw with St Agnes to remain second in the Cornwall Women’s Premier Division behind unbeaten leaders Sticker.

Elsewhere in football, St Mawgan moved up to third in the St Piran League Premier Division East with a 1-0 away win at Gunnislake.

In Division One East, St Stephen beat St Newlyn East 2-0.

It was a difficult afternoon for the Newquay Hornets in rugby as they were beaten 54-10 by neighbours Perranporth.

The result leaves them eighth in Counties Two Cornwall.

In hockey, Newquay women’s first team drew 2-2 with Sidmouth & Ottery.

Their second team were beaten 4-1 by the University of Plymouth, while the thirds lost 8-1 to Camborne School of Mines.

Newquay’s men were edged out 2-1 by Duchy.

In boxing, Newquay’s Brad Pauls says he is ready for a “massive opportunity” as he prepares to face unbeaten world middleweight champion Shakiel Thompson in Manchester on Saturday.

For Pauls, the former British middleweight title holder, it will be his first fight since 25 May last year.
