New supermarket to open in Nansledan in 2027

A new supermarket in the Duchy of Cornwall’s Nansledan development is set to open in 2027.

The Duchy says work on the construction of Market Street area is underway.

Billed as the “commercial heart” of Nansledan, it will become a vibrant new food, retail, office and leisure destination.

Described as a modern-day high street and year-round lifestyle destination for local residents, the wider catchment area and visitors, Market Street will also encourage local artisans and businesses with their own unique character, focusing on leisure, health and wellbeing, and the creation of community spaces that bring people together and encourage social activity.

Work so far has involved drilling 445 piles to create the foundations for the landmark scheme, which will use 500 tonnes of steel in its construction. To support the 43.5-tonne piling rig, engineers prepared a piling mat made from 1,700 cubic metres of stone.

The 75,000 sq ft scheme is being directly developed by the Duchy of Cornwall and will be delivered in two phases.

The first phase will include a Tesco supermarket, a Market Hall featuring street food stalls showcasing Cornish produce, a communal dining area, five shop units and co-working space above.

The second phase will feature 13 additional shop units, seven offices and a public courtyard designed as a focal point for outdoor dining and community events.

Tesco will be the first occupier to open in Market Street, with its new 24,500 sq ft supermarket set to create around 100 jobs and offer a range of food and non-food goods, including clothing and Click+Collect services.

Work on Tesco’s building will continue through 2026, with the store expected to open in May 2027. The entire scheme is anticipated to be completed around May 2028.

Peter James, Project Manager for the Duchy of Cornwall, said:
“The piling work marks an exciting and tangible step forward for Market Street. This is the foundation of a new destination at the heart of Nansledan, a place that will bring together food, retail, workspace and community life in one vibrant setting. We’re proud to see this vision begin to take shape and look forward to delivering a high-quality, sustainable centre that reflects the Duchy’s commitment to placemaking and building communities.”

Marcus Vinnicombe, Property Acquisitions and Disposals Director at Tesco, said:
“It’s exciting to see work starting on Market Street and our new Tesco supermarket in Nansledan. Together with the Duchy of Cornwall, we look forward to helping Market Street become a thriving destination that serves and supports the whole community.”

Units in Market Street will range from start-up spaces of 23 sq m (250 sq ft) to larger units of up to 370 sq m (4,000 sq ft). So far, 880 homes have been built within the development.
