Bosses at Cornwall Highways have explained why Give and Take restrictions were used instead of temporary traffic lights during roadworks on a busy Newquay road.
The measures, which were in place until Friday on Trevenson Road, caused delays as vehicles took turns to move around the lane closure.
Radio Newquay contacted Cornwall Council on 19th February after listeners reported significant delays between the schools and the Household Waste and Recycling Centre. In a response from Cornwall Highways, sent as the roadworks came to an end, a spokesperson said: "Give and Take is a permissible form of traffic management on a 30mph road."
They confirmed that site inspections were carried out at various times, including traffic counts and safety checks, to ensure traffic flowed as well as could be expected.
They added: "We realise that during peak times there was a spike in traffic, but from experience, temporary traffic lights can be more of a hindrance than a help.
"Give and take is the most dynamic form of traffic management but it does rely on the cooperation and patience of road users."
