Newquay AFC climb to fifth after back-to-back wins as local sides endure mixed weekend

Newquay AFC secured their second 2-0 victory in five days to climb to fifth in the Western League, while it was a disappointing weekend for several other local football, rugby and hockey teams.

Tim Nixon scored twice as the Peppermints returned from Shepton Mallet with all three points on Saturday.

The victory rounded off a successful week for Newquay, who had also beaten Brixham 2-0 on Tuesday evening.

The back-to-back wins leave the Peppermints fifth in the Western League standings.

Mixed fortunes for local football sides

St Mawgan bowed out of the South West Peninsula League Cup following a 3-2 defeat at home to Torrington.

James Andreetti and Jamie Patient were on target for Mawgan at Trevarrian, but their efforts were not enough to keep the side in the competition.

Elsewhere, Newquay Reserves secured a 2-0 victory away to St Blazey Seconds, while Newquay Under-23s suffered a narrow 1-0 home defeat against Mevagissey.

Hornets beaten on return to rugby action

Newquay Hornets returned to action following last weekend's conceded fixture against Penryn, which they were unable to fulfil because of a shortage of available players.

The Hornets travelled to Wadebridge Camels Seconds in Cornwall Counties Two, but the home side proved too strong, running out 47-12 winners.

Difficult weekend for Newquay hockey teams

It was a disappointing round of fixtures for Newquay's hockey sides, with all four teams in action suffering defeats.

The women's first team were beaten 5-0 at home by Taunton Vale, leaving them seventh in West Women's Division One South.

Hole-in-one at Newquay Golf Club

There was something to celebrate at Newquay Golf Club, where Sean Millward recorded a hole-in-one during the recent Tangye Cup competition.

Millward achieved the feat on the 16th hole, providing a memorable moment during the competition.
