A number of new locations in Cornwall will see dogs banned or restricted to being kept on a lead, including part of Perranporth beach.
Cornwall Council’s cabinet member for community safety and public health, Cllr Thalia Marrington, is due to sign off a number of dog restrictions across Cornwall at a meeting next week.
The October 15 renewal of the Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) for dog fouling, dog exclusions and dogs on leads will include a number of amendments, with a number of locations being added where dogs are banned or must be kept on leads. A number of places will be removed from the exclusion order too.
New locations where dogs will be excluded include part of Tehidy country park and the regatta field in Charlestown. Dogs will now have to be kept on leads in Morrab Gardens, Penzance, and the south end of Perranporth beach by the village. See below for a full list of affected locations.
Cornwall currently has two PSPOs that cover the whole of the Duchy which prohibit dog fouling and require dogs to be placed on leads when directed to by an authorised officer. There are also a further two orders which exclude dogs from specific defined areas as well as orders which require dogs to be on leads in specified places.
In Cornwall alone, the council receives approximately 650 to 750 dog fouling complaints each year. The PSPO provides enforceable powers to tackle persistent problems, helping to ensure that parks, footpaths, beaches and other public spaces remain safe and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike.
A report to next Wednesday’s Individual Decision Day meeting states: “Dog exclusion orders help protect sensitive areas such as children’s play areas, sports pitches and other locations where the presence of dogs may present hygiene, safety or nuisance concerns. These restrictions help ensure that public facilities remain clean, safe and accessible for all users.”
