Tributes pour in to much-loved member of Newquay Rowing Club

Hundreds of people have paid tribute to John Bawden; a founder member of the club.

Posting online Newquay Rowing Club said it was with "great sadness" that John had passed away peacefully at home on Monday, following a brave battle with Cancer.

John had been part of Newquay Rowing Club for over 60 years as a rower, coxswain, secretary, treasurer, commodore and trustee of the gigs. The club described him as a lifelong member whose "knowledge and expertise of the gigs will be truly missed, not just in Newquay but throughout the county."

Hundreds of people have paid their own tributes to John, many highlighting his kindness, passion and wisdom - as well as his importance in the revival and heritage of gig rowing.

Radio Newquay presenter Matt Bunt says John has left behind an incredible legacy: "As a young press photographer taking photos of the local gig races down the Harbour, John was always such a welcoming presence. He would greet me with a smile, usually find some way to take the mick out of me, and always made me feel completely at ease.

What always came across was the incredible depth of John’s experience, expertise and knowledge – not just of gig rowing, but of Newquay’s heritage gigs, the harbour and harbour life. He was always generous with both his time and his knowledge, and I’ll always be grateful to him for making me feel so welcome. Sending my condolences to John's family. What a legacy he's left behind."
