A celebrated Royal Shakespeare Company production of Julius Caesar is being performed at Treviglas Academy.
The Newquay secondary school has been hosting First Encounters: Julius Caesar, all this week, featuring Harriet Walter reprising her role as Brutus in Phyllida Lloyd’s 2012 Donmar Warehouse production.
The visit forms part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s First Encounters with Shakespeare tour, where the company has been working in residence at Treviglas - just one of five partner schools across the country.
The production offers a fresh perspective on Shakespeare’s politically charged tragedy, with the story unfolding from the back of a prison van - and tonight is your last chance to see the show in Newquay.
A group of female prisoners present a 90-minute version of the play, drawing on their own concerns about freedom and justice. As the performance develops, the boundaries between the story and the prisoners’ own experiences begin to blur.
Tonight's performance is at 7pm and will be followed by a post-show discussion - tickets are £5.
Sam Colborne, Head of Creative Arts, Treviglas said: "We are delighted to be welcoming the Royal Shakespeare Company back to Treviglas, bringing live performance to our students and community. While we have hosted them before, this production promises to be really special. Not only are they building a purpose build auditorium inside our sports Hub, but the legend that is Dame Harriet Walter is heading up the cast!
"Be it performances or workshops, there are lots of amazing opportunities for our students. The wider community is invited to the four evening performances of the show, and can buy tickets from Hall from Cornwall’s website. Treviglas has enjoyed a fantastic partnership with both the RSC and Hall For Cornwall for over a decade now, and this feels like a fitting celebration of that partnership."
