Public urged not to approach seals on beaches in Cornwall

The charity British Divers Marine Life Rescue is reminding people to keep their distance from seals, as many are simply resting at this time of year.

The organisation says seasonal behaviour can often be mistaken for distress, with seals now more likely to be larger, independent and regularly seen sleeping on beaches.

They may also lie on one side and remain still for long periods, which can appear unusual but is often completely normal.

However, the charity says there are some signs that could indicate a seal is unwell. These include coughing, sneezing, heavy breathing or visible discharge, which can sometimes be linked to lungworm – a parasite found in wild seals.

Members of the public are being urged not to approach or disturb seals, even if they appear to be alone.

Instead, anyone who is concerned is encouraged to contact British Divers Marine Life Rescue for advice.

The charity says it is available to take calls at any time on 01825 765546.
