Heavy rain and strong winds cause disruption across Cornwall

Heavy rain and strong winds have once again caused disruption across Cornwall, with flooding affecting roads and rail services.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain, extending the warning period until 10pm tonight. Forecasters say further heavy rainfall is expected, falling on already saturated ground.

Prolonged rain overnight has forced the closure of the Newquay to Par branch line. Great Western Railway says flooding between Par and Newquay means the line is closed, with all services to and from the stations cancelled. Disruption is expected to continue until 2pm today.

Kernow Weather Team (KWT) says Storm Ingrid, named by the Portuguese weather service IPMA, will continue to influence conditions through Saturday as it slowly drifts north over the Celtic Sea. Forecasters warn the slow-moving system is bringing repeated bands of heavy rain, sometimes merging into longer spells with only brief lulls.

Rainfall totals of between 20 and 40 millimetres are expected widely, with up to 50 millimetres possible in some exposed and higher areas. With ground conditions now fully saturated, this is increasing the risk of surface water flooding, water running off fields and roads becoming difficult or impassable.

Several roads have already been affected, with the A3058 between Dairyland and Gummows Shop flooded, and large areas of standing water reported in and around Newquay.

KWT say while winds are not expected to be as strong as on Friday, gusts approaching gale force are possible on Saturday morning, particularly along coasts and higher ground. Forecasters say this could worsen conditions in flooded areas by increasing spray, debris and reducing visibility, and drivers are being urged to take extra care.
