The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as Cornwall prepares for Storm Ingrid, which is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds.

The warning for rain and wind is in place from 2am on Friday until 9am on Saturday. Forecasters say an initial band of rain early on Friday could bring between 10 and 20 millimetres in just a few hours, falling onto already saturated ground.

Further spells of heavy rain and showers are expected through Friday afternoon, evening and overnight, with totals of 15 to 20 millimetres widely, and up to 30 to 40 millimetres in some places by Saturday morning. This raises the risk of surface water flooding, waterlogged fields and difficult driving conditions.

Kernow Weather Team (KWT) says the storm was named by the Portuguese weather service, IPMA. Strong winds are also forecast, with gusts of 45 to 50 miles an hour inland and potentially more than 70 miles an hour along exposed coasts, bringing large waves and dangerous coastal conditions.

Winds are expected to peak on Friday evening before easing into Saturday morning.

Forecaster Dave Clark from KWT: "This is not another Goretti, but it is a spell of impactful weather that’s worth taking seriously especially after everything the ground has already absorbed recently."
