An urgent appeal has been launched to help save a three-year-old dog who is "fighting for her life".
The RSPCA Cornwall branch, based near St Columb Major, is currently caring for a Pomeranian named Pombear who has been diagnosed with pyometra, a life-threatening womb infection in unspayed female dogs. The charity said that without immediate surgery she could die.
The operation and treatment are expected to cost more than £1,500 and the branch, which is self-funded, is asking the public for support through a JustGiving page.
“This sweet little dog has been through so much already, and we are determined to give her the best chance,” said Leanne Bawden from RSPCA Cornwall Branch. “We need the community’s help to fund her life-saving surgery, but we also want to use this opportunity to raise awareness of pyometra; a devastating yet preventable condition.”
The RSPCA said any funds raised beyond Pombear’s treatment costs would go towards helping other animals in need.
Pyometra is a severe infection of the uterus which can lead to sepsis, kidney failure and death if untreated. The condition is entirely preventable by spaying female dogs, which also reduces the risk of mammary cancer.
“This isn’t just about saving one dog,” Ms Bawden said. “By raising awareness, we can prevent other families from experiencing the heartbreak of pyometra. Spaying is a simple, routine procedure that can save lives.”
