Storm Chandra named as further disruptive weather heads for Cornwall

It follows a weekend of disruption caused by Storm Ingrid, which led to flooding in Mawgan Porth, forcing some businesses to close temporarily and leaving cars submerged. Flooding also resulted in the closure of the Newquay to Par branch line.

The latest storm comes just weeks after Storm Goretti earlier this month, which brought down trees, damaged buildings and also caused rail disruption across Newquay and the rest of Cornwall.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, in force from 5pm until 4pm on Tuesday, alongside a yellow warning for rain running from Monday afternoon through to Tuesday morning.

Kernow Weather Team say strong winds are expected to develop overnight, particularly around exposed coasts, hills and headlands, with gusts of 50 to 60 miles an hour possible inland and up to 80 miles an hour along exposed stretches. There is a chance of even stronger gusts for parts of the Isles of Scilly.

Heavy rain is also expected at times, falling onto already saturated ground. This increases the risk of localised flooding, surface water on roads and travel disruption, particularly during Tuesday morning. Combined with strong winds, there are also concerns about weakened trees and fallen branches.

The unsettled conditions are expected to continue beyond Tuesday, with further spells of rain likely later in the week.
